Weekly newsletter: May 26, 2026
Hi everyone!
It’s the last week of May, and the weather is beautiful. Winter is surely almost over.
The Ottawa Farmers’ Market (Barrhaven)↗ restarts this Sunday, and will be at the Nepean Woods Park and Ride every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm until the end of October. The organisation is producer-run and features vendors from within 100 kilometres of Ottawa.
As well, Eid Mubarak to residents celebrating Eid al-Adha tomorrow!
Three-stream waste bins at parks
Installation at Cresthaven and Stonecrest parks to begin next week.
Last year, City Council approved the new parks waste collection strategy, which includes three-stream (garbage, recycling, organics) collection at all parks with sports fields. The new strategy also includes organics containers at all off-leash designated parks (2027) and upgrading the regular garbage containers (timeline TBD).
In Barrhaven East, Cresthaven and Stonecrest are the first parks to receive three-stream bins. Some modifications to staff’s original proposed container locations were made, resulting in the container locations as shown in the maps above.
A third cluster of containers at Cresthaven Park was suggested by some residents and my office, but were ultimately not recommended by staff.
Expansion of the three-stream containers will continue to be staggered over the next few years, listed as follows in this ward.
Berry Glen Park (2027)
Chapman Mills Park (2028)
Cresthaven Park (2026)
Foot Guards Park (2029)
Grovehurst Park (2027)
Gus Este Park (2029)
Harbour View Park (2029)
Mancini Park (2027)
Mulligan Park (2028)
Neill-Nesbitt Park (2027)
Stinson Park (2028)
Stonecrest Park (2026)
Utman Park (2029)
Watershield Park (2028)
In 2027, parks that are not receiving three-stream containers, but have an off-leash dog designation will receive organic waste containers at entrances reachable by service vehicles. In Barrhaven East, these are:
Andy Moffitt Trail
Clark Bellinger ponds
Hearts Desire Forest
Holitman dog run
Kennedy-Craig Forest
Longfields/Jockvale stormwater management area
Nepean Woods (pending review of dog designation)
North Harrow Park
Redpath Park
Watters Woods
Lastly, all parks garbage containers, except those replaced by three-stream bins, will be updated to a design that’s larger, easier to service, and most likely include lids. The timeline for new garbage containers is unknown for now.
Progress updates will be reported annually to Council, which I will share via newsletter and social media. I’m grateful for the resident engagement so far on the topic and look forward to your continued feedback as the rollout of the new programs begin!
Bite-sized updates
Sorted alphabetically. New/updated items marked with asterisk (*).
Beatrice/Queensbury (bus stop 3345) shelter – Staff anticipate this shelter’s installation in July.
Census scam – Residents have reported receiving text messages stating their census is incomplete or not received. Statistics Canada may send text reminders, but they are always sent from 782-782 or 236-732 in both English and French. Be cautious of phone calls, emails, or texts claiming to be census follow-ups or similar, especially if they request personal or financial information.
*Cresthaven road repair – Final repairs to Cresthaven between Baypointe and Versilia, where a watermain break happened over the winter, are scheduled for June 11. The section of Cresthaven will be closed to through traffic that day, but driveway access is expected to be maintained. The works should take one day.
Development application, 3400 Woodroffe↗ – Thank you to the residents who attended last month’s public information meeting. Minutes and supplementary information were shared previously. Updates will follow when available.

Fallowfield Via Rail Station – Construction will happen 10:00 pm to 10:00 am nightly until June 30 (excluding Fridays and weekends, unless delayed by weather during the week) to partially rebuild the train station’s island platform. No impacts to the OC Transpo station are expected.
Household hazardous waste – This year’s drop-off depots near Barrhaven are noted below. See Ottawa.ca/HHW↗ for instructions and depots scheduled for other dates and further away from Barrhaven. Many items, like light bulbs, spent batteries, old tires, paint, electronics, and more, can also be dropped off at retailers and other locations↗ throughout the year.

October 17, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm – Strandherd snow dump, 4061 Strandherd Drive↗ (enter via Dealership Drive)
Longfields/Via Verona sidewalk – Construction will begin in the coming weeks to fill in a missing link in the sidewalk on the west side of Longfields between Via Verona and Via Chianti. Originally, this was to be done with the adjacent parcel’s development, but with a horizon of seven to 10 years, an arrangement was made with the developer to install an interim sidewalk made of asphalt, which will be winter maintained. Thank you to the resident and their daughter who raised this at my town hall last autumn!
NCC Bike Days – The National Capital Commission’s weekend and holiday closures↗ of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway have resumed. Like previous years, the driveway will be closed to motorised traffic between Fifth avenue and Somerset street weekends and holidays from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm until Thanksgiving. Similar closures also affect the Kichi Zībī Mīkan and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway.
*Parks three-stream bins – Three-stream (garbage, recycling, organics) waste bins will be installed at Cresthaven and Stonecrest parks starting next week.

*Strandherd bus lanes resurfacing – Resurfacing of the bus lanes on Strandherd between Prince of Wales and west of Cresthaven should be complete by the end of day today, Tuesday May 26.
Summer jobs with the City – Summer job postings in parks and recreation are now live at Ottawa.ca/jobs↗. Please note some positions are restricted to post-secondary students, while others are open to all students.
Walter Baker Sports Centre – The swimming pools are closed for structural and deck repair works until June 28. Annual maintenance will also be completed during the closure.
*Woodroffe/Deerfox-Stoneway – The road cuts at the intersection will receive final remediation this week, as hot asphalt is available again for the construction season. Repairs will include the road cuts on Deerfox, Stoneway, and across both directions of Woodroffe, and should take a day or two. All works will be completed off peak hours
That’s all for this week!
