How to dispose of storm-related waste

If you were impacted by the storm and heavy rainfall on Wednesday, July 1, you have a few options to dispose of any excess waste.

Storm-related materials will either be collected during regular garbage pickup or as a separate storm-dedicated collection, depending on resources. If your waste is left behind, please leave it at the curb as it will be collected later.

Garbage

For storm-affected residents, you may leave out more materials than the standard three-item limit.

Textile floor coverings such as carpet, under pad or area rugs may also be placed at the curb with no restriction on volumes. These materials must be securely tied into compact bundles. Visit the Waste Explorer↗ for set out requirements.

Construction and demolition material

You may set out up to two containers of construction and demolition waste related to the storm on your next scheduled garbage collection day. Containers must be set out according to regular garbage collection guidelines↗.

You will need to work through your insurance and/or a contractor to deal with larger quantities of construction and demolition waste.

Disposal at Trail Road Waste Facility Landfill

If you have submitted a service request for a flooded basement↗ or storm-related waste↗, you can dispose of eligible materials at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill↗ free of charge. You will need to bring your service request number, valid photo identification and proof of address.

For those who have already brought storm-related debris to Trail Road, details on how to apply for a refund will be available shortly.

Household hazardous waste

Household hazardous waste is not accepted through any curbside collection and should be safely stored until it can be disposed of through the City's Household Hazardous Waste program↗.

Electronic waste

Electronic waste (e-waste) is not accepted through any curbside collection. E-waste can be taken to e-waste events↗ or the Trail Waste Facility Landfill↗ free of charge as usual.

Leaf and yard waste

You can continue to set out unlimited leaf and yard waste↗ for collection in paper yard waste bags or reusable containers labelled “Leaf and Yard Waste.”

Green bin and spoiled food

Please use your green bin↗ to dispose of spoiled food and other organic waste resulting from extended power outages. There is no limit to the amount of green bin waste.

If you have extra food waste from the storm, you can place additional garbage bags beside your green bin. Clearly label each bag “Green Bin.” These materials will be collected with your regularly scheduled green bin pick up.
